Portable, capable 3D scanner

This scanner comes in a nice, molded carrying case so you can safely keep all the accessories together. The unit is much better built than my previous Reality Scan Ferret. The software has a bit of a learning curve and struggles with shiny or glossy surfaces unless you use the recommended (but not included) spray. Overall it works well but I would recommend practicing on a few small objects before you jump right into a big project. It really helps to have a turntable or lazy Susan so you can keep the object at the correct distance.

Overhyped

Requires 3D scan spray even for objects that don't seem like they should need it

3d scanner tool for digital artists and 3d printing projects

It is working pretty well so far. I need to learn and experiment with it a lot more, and will try to update my review if there's anything notable. It's nice to have an option for 3D scanning at home as a very versatile crafting and art tool, especially for 3d modeling and sculpting projects. The software takes a little getting used to, but that's not unexpected either. It's nice that it includes a turntable and tripod, it will be fun to experiment more with this.

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT

I don't know if I have a defective unit, if I'm stupid, or what but I just can not get a good model out of this, you have to be an EXACT distance away from it, and it has to be a certain material or be covered in a special evaporating coating that is kind of pricy. I have a Ryzen 7 7700X and a 4080TI and it took a LONG time to process a small simple model< I ended up getting bored and just recreated it myself quicker with calipers. I tried with this thing I really did but no matter what I did I couldn't reliability get a good, and useful scan out of it. It FEELS like everything is there, it FEELS like it should be capable of it but it just doesn't output anything in line with that feeling sadly.EDIT: I recently picked up some sublimation spray and that really helped the scanner to see what I was unable to scan before. It'd definitely more of an art than I was expecting, and still quite difficult, but much more attainable now. Don't cheap out like I did and not get the spray, it's $35 well spent. That said the software still is pretty bad IMO, it is sluggish, convoluted, and obtrusive in a way that can make it difficult to know what you're doing, not to mention that it has no 3d maker pro branding so it feels a little sketchy to use/install.

Worth It

This came in a well-designed, padded case that held the scanner, a sturdy tripod that has a wide, fold-out base, carbon fiber post and a circular joint connector with a standard ¼ inch threaded camera mount that also fits the base of the scanner. Also included is a USB powered turntable on which you can put medium/small size objects. It comes with a power supply that has interchangeable plug connectors for international outlets.Though easy to set up, the learning curve is quite steep. Like most scanners it doesn’t like black or glossy/shiny surfaces. To overcome this it is recommended to use a thin white matte spray coating to cover the object. There are various options out there. I used water based paint. But there are also spray powder or special spray cans that evaporates without trace after a couple of hours. Any of these will allow you to spray dark and/or shiny objects with varying levels of cleanup. The scanner is easy to set up in the software. No calibration is required. On Windows it automatically registers and downloads the calibration for your scanner. I used it to scan the latching bracket on my metal detector and prototype a hinged alternative that allows the control panel to fold flat. It worked out better than I anticipated. Fine details are not its forte, but it is highly accurate for capturing an object with 3 or 4 mm holes that have to fit together closely. The scanner has geometry and texture scanning mode. The texture scanning makes details easier and also textures your object in greyscale. You have to pay extra for a separate color kit. I was satisfied enough to purchase the mobile connect add-on separately. This allows me to scan on the move, independent of the computer and without the limitations of the short cord the kit comes with. Without it, you have to operate the scanner within about 3 feet of your computer. With the mobile connect you don’t need a computer, just a fairly powerful cell phone.Once I got used to the slightly odd interface in the scan software, getting decent results was easy. Very happy, though it is a little on the expensive side.
