Surprisingly good inline extractor for the cost, does the job, moves a lot of air without much noise

This unit arrives in a plain brown cardboard box alongside some wall plugs, self-threading screws and a pair of printed bits of information, one of which is a simple wiring diagram and the other is more of a product overview with information about the entire range of fans, not just the one provided. It’s reasonably well put together, honestly it’s much nicer than I was expecting for the cost, all the plastic pieces are well made with no rough spots or sharp bits of plastic. It also feels robust enough for the job at hand which is really just holding ducting and the fan unit itself in place on the chosen surface and directing the air through it. The entire fan is as modular as shown, and it doesn’t take much effort to undo the metal clamps to remove the motor section without having to undo the ducting, which makes it far easier to clean out as needed during its life. Before going to the trouble of installing it in my intended location I gave it a quick bench test, and it spun right up when provided with mains voltage via the pre-wired 3 core cable. I gave the timer a quick test on both the minimum and maximum and at both positions it does what it is supposed to do, which is leave the fan running for 1 minute and 30 minutes respectively. It has no issues moving air as expected and even with it not embedded in the ceiling or wall it’s not all that loud considering the quantity of air it’s pushing and the low overall cost. I have no quantifiable method of checking the actual claims of how much air it moves and the actual volume level, but it’s on par with similarly sized in-line extractor fans I’ve used before. My only complaint personally is that there doesn’t appear to be any markings or indicators for the direction of the airflow, so I suspect a lot of people are going to accidentally install this in the wrong orientation if they don’t test it beforehand. Though with the modular setup it’s not terribly difficult to flip the fan around as needed, assuming you’ve got enough excess length on the cable to do so.At the current price of £24.43 this is a good value option assuming it lasts a reasonable length of time with frequent use, I’ve only had this for a couple of weeks, and it’s being used for extracting fumes from a 3D printer enclosure so my use-case is a little different from intended, but it’s been working fine for several weeks now. If that changes and I run into any issues I'll be sure to update the review accordingly.

Reasonable flow of air with low noise, required careful check in terminal box.

This is a 4” in-line fan with overrun timer.Made from good quality plastic with slight flexibility.Reasonably quiet in operation with only very slight fan vibration. Rated at 31db, it will probably be quieter once connected to insulated ventilation hoses.Three core wired for neutral, permanent live and switched live, the power cable being about 35cm long. The power cable could be replaced easily if a longer cable is requires as there are screw connectors within the terminal box mounted on the side of the fan.Removing the two screws on the terminal box cover plate reveals the small circuit board containing the adjustable run on timer (1 to 30 mins), the wiring connectors and a switch. The switch is a two position switch, presumably for a two speed extractor fan, but this is wired for only one speed and this switch consequently disables the fan in the in the other position. So if after wiring yours doesn’t run, check the switch position. The circuit board had been hot melt glued in position, but was loose and not held in place. I suppose this could a llow the circuit board to vibrate when the fan is running. One of the wiring connector blocks had been twisted out of alignment and it transpired this was from over tightening the screw clamps. In addition there were odd single copper strands the hadn’t been trapped properly in the connector block running the risk of shorting against the adjacent wire. These had to be re fitted, however one connector was so tight it couldn’t be undone. The small timer control requires a small cross head screw to adjust the timer. Usefully it has a stop at each end of the adjustment range. It was supplied preset for the minimum time. This is wired as double insulated with no earth wire in the power lead, though an earth wire is present coming from the motor into the terminal box which is simply trapped under the incoming power cable clamp. The limited information provided with the fan simply covers connecting the power source. The motor is clamped to the 4” in-line hose connectors at each end of the fan with stainless steel quick release bands enabling the motor to be removed for maintenance or access. This leaves behind the hose connectors and the fixing bracket which can be screwed in place. Personally I recommend isolating this bracket from a direct connection with floor or joists with foam to reduce noise or vibration being transmitted into the fabric of the building which you would then hear. One star reduction for the condition inside the terminal box.

Does a good job but there are niggles

The media could not be loaded. First thing to mention is that inline fans meet the regulations for extraction from a shower enclosure. The performance is good. The parts are made from appropriate materials but I have to say that the assembly of the parts could be better - you can re-assemble them better yourself. You might also find little bits of material rattling around in the terminal box that need to be removed (vacuum cleaner) and the terminal box plastic moulding has some flashing that should have been removed by the manufacturer. You may find that the terminal box lid is fouled by the quick release clamps that hold the fan body to it’s stand, so you have to remove the lid before you can remove the fan body. With the lid removed, unlatch the clamps and slide them around until they are positioned such that they no longer foul the terminal box lid. This type of product really should not be delivered with any faults, but the faults I came across you can easily and safely fix.Video: On a PC, left mouse click the maximise symbol, bottom right corner, to view the video full-screen.
