Maybe the best USB card?

I've been trying very hard to make a VR headset (Oculus Rift S) work on my old computer (Gigabyte EP45-UD3R from 2008, Intel quad core 3Ghz, GTX 980, 8GB RAM) which only has USB2.I followed recommendations from various websites and tried 4 or 5 different USB cards. This one is the only one that almost worked. All the other ones, even the Inatek card with its own power connector, always left the VR headset with USB issues, such as "not enough USB bandwidth" error messages, or "can't track headset".With this card, I could run a VR video/app and when I moved the headset, I could see the view change on my monitor. Sadly, there was still no display in the headset itself (the headset works perfectly fine on another, newer computer), neither on a GTX 670 (which would probably be too old for VR anyway) nor on a GTX 980 (which should work perfectly fine with VR).So, Startech might be twice the price compared to cheap cards, but the quality seems to be there. If your computer is not as old as mine, and you have VR issues related to USB, I recommend you try this card first. On my end, I think I'm gonna give up with VR on this PC (after 2 months of trying so many different things).

Perfect for extra VR room sensors

This product came recommended through a few YouTube videos and some online VR forums. I was having problems running more than two sensors with my current usb 3.0 5 port card.. and as it turned out, even though there were 5 ports, only two controllers so there was always a conflict. This card absolutely solved my issue because each port has its own controller so it allowed all my room sensors to run at full speed usb 3.0 capacity. For refer, I am using a 3 sensor setup with an Oculus Rift CV1 setup, two up front on either side of my tv in my living room, and one on the back wall in the center facing down. I played for about two hours to test, and never lost connectivity with any of the sensors. Well worth the price paid to have all my equipment work as it should!

Worked well for less than a month

All but 1 USB port have stopped working less than 1 month after installationI got this card because I had 3 USB devices that were constantly giving me issues, my battery backup's communication port, my external audio interface, and my VR headset. After a few days of not using my computer, I turned it on and find that the USB port that my battery backup is plugged into has disabled itself in Windows, I re-enable it, and do not encounter this specific issue againA few days after that, the 4th port that I was not using has magically disappeared from the list of USB controllers...And 29 days after installation, all but one port have stopped working. When I originally installed this card, I ran a tool that polled all the controllers individually, all 4 polled. Now only 1 polls. The external USB audio interface power light glows very dimly after plugging it into one of the bad ports, so it could be a power or some kind of short that has manifested for some reason. I have returned this and ordered the new version of this card that StarTech has recently started selling, as a replacement.

Flaky (but it's not clear whether it's the card's or the computer's fault)

I have an old HP xw9400 workstation without any USB3 ports. I bought this card to provide some and because it was recommended by a co-worker who had tried it out on an HP DL380 server. But there seems to be some incompatibility between this card and the above workstation: I only got 3 out of the 4 ports responding. There were three free PCIe slots available, so I tried the other slots with no improvement. Assuming that the card was defective, I notified Amazon, and they sent me a second one - which was worse: only two out of the 4 ports responding. I put the original card in as well and tried plugging in a USB3 thumb drive in each port: all 4 ports on both cards were working! I took the second card out: back to 3 out of 4 working. That's where I am right now, since I sent the replacement back. The fact that all four ports worked in one configuration shows that the card is perhaps not defective, but it is certainly flaky. Caveat emptor, particularly if your machine is old (but if your machine is newer, you probably don't need this card anyway).Besides that, I second the common concern of the orientation of the ports: I understand that they wanted the card to fit half-height boxes with the shorter bracket and orienting the ports perpendicular to the long dimension of the bracket was the only way to accomplish that, but as others have noted, the width of the opening is just enough to accomodate a USB plug, so any misalignment of the card in the opening makes it impossible to plug in anything. The technique I used to avoid that problem was to plug in a USB cable to the top port (the one farthest away from the PCIe slot) while the card was not tightened down completely: then screwing it down (or latching it down as in my case) prevents it from getting out of alignment and you can plug in to the other ports with no problems.EDIT (2022): My (very old) xw9400 finally gave up the ghost and I replaced it with a (merely old) Z840. I moved the card to the "new" computer and it all works as it should. I guess there was some incompaitibility with the old machine. Extra star added to the rating.
