Thorium Nitrate is what most mantles are dipped in newer ones use yttrium or cerium. When burned the first time the thorium is changed to thorium oxide, and this is what you see when you use your light. It has basically been converted from nylon webbing to ceramic. An inch away from a thorium mantle and you’re at background radiation so the radioactivity at the actual mantle is near negligible (still there but not harmful).
