Helpful for a digital transfer project - Good unit
For years I've promised myself that I would digitize my store of cassette tapes (currently housed in two large storage buckets). It's taken some time and as I go through the process I discover about every 5th or so tape needs either to be spliced or re-housed in a blank cassette shell. Some of my tapes are over 50 years old.As I slowly plow though my treasure trove, it's nice to have a small, portable, handy device that makes dealing with splicing as painless as possible (it's still a pain, but this unit does help).I find that the "fixers" are a little difficult to get inserted just right to hold the tape in place but with a little patience and care they do work, albeit not without some effort. This unit handles not only cassette tape sizes, but wider audio tape sizes as well. The included sticky tape gets the job done. It's wider than a cassette tape width, so it must be trimmed after application but with a sharp razor that's fairly easy to do.I'm glad these sorts of products are still available for media that is increasingly obsolete.

ABS splicing block
I admit it -- I ordered this splicing block as a nod to my past life as a radio broadcaster, where I spent many happy (and sometimes unhappy) hours editing and splicing broken audio tapes. I wasn't very convinced that I would like a block that was made essentially out of plastic as the only blocks I'd used were metal. This splicing block isn't quite as precise as my old metal splicing blocks -- the tape grooves are shallower than the metal blocks which can lead to unplanned shifting -- but it offers the advantage of being able to splice multiple sizes of tape whereas my old blocks only offered one or two. Just as long as your razor blade (or xacto knife I suppose) is sharp, this block does a good job just as long as you pay attention to the tape's alignment in the grooves. This is also an issue with the metal blocks of course, but since they are a bit deeper, the tape was a bit less likely to go rogue. I haven't tried the included splicing tape as I'm still trying to locate my audiotapes... once I find them, I know there will be a bit of splicing necessary and I will test the splicing tape at that time and update this review with my findings. For now, I am giving this the thumbs up with the caveat that those of us who spent a lot of time with metal blocks may not enjoy this block as much.
