A very interesting story from one of the greatest Slavic writers of all time - who was also renowned for his humour. There are two separate stories in the book, 'The Nose' and 'The Carriage'. The first tells about a man whose nose leaves him and ends up riding in a carriage around St. Petersburg dressed as though he works for a government department. It is a reminder to all of us not to be boastful. The Carriage has a similar theme running through it, reminding us that we should never make promises that we can't keep.

Be led by 'The Nose'
These Penguin Little Black Classics just never let you down. This particular one contains two stories ('The Nose' and 'The Carriage') from Gogol - certainly whimsy, wry and most definitely absurd. Make of them what you will, let your imagination run riot and read with a totally open mind. Very enjoyable.

A minor absurdist masterpiece
Very funny and fine bit of absurdist proto-surrealism from Gogol. A man's nose departs from his face and takes on a life of its own, even achieving a higher rank and better clothing than its former owner. A local barber with a drinking problem may or may not be responsible for the whole mess, but all's well that ends well.
