Some shipping damage. Not recommended for the novice.
Upon delivery I noticed damage to the shipping box. I thought little of that assuming the computer was double-boxed. Not so, just some strategically placed soft black foam. On the long trip from NY to CA, a drive slot plastic cover was knocked into the case, the case was dented, and one fan had most of its rubber mounts ripped apart. When I picked up the computer it rattled. When I removed the side panel I found the missing drive slot cover wedged near the bottom and a fan hanging on by just one mount and wiring.Naturally I could have returned it, but the computer looked new otherwise. No noticeable scratches outside. No nicks on the motherboard. All wiring connections were solidly in place. The plastic CD drive slot cover appears to have been caught in a frame gap and maybe the 3 metal screws on it didn't scratch the motherboard. Likewise the case fan was suspended from its wiring and that with the one remaining mount was just enough to have it avoid hitting anything delicate. Maybe I got lucky. The dent in the case was near the empty expansion slots and was easily knocked back out. Because I am a computer nerd I had some left over fan mounts from other projects. I didn't care about the broken drive slot cover because I planned to add a 2nd DVD drive to fill that hole. My only concern was whether the metal screws sticking out from the backside of the cover scratched any vital part inside or the dangling fan was damaged. After fixing the damage I powered it up and everything worked! I ran all the built-in self tests and it passed them all. The only issue was the many BIOS settings which are oriented to corporate setup. I failed to photograph all the BIOS settings as delivered before changing some. In particular the drive BIOS was set to RAID even though it came with only one drive, a SSD. Changing that setting to standard SATA killed Win boot. Looking into this I discovered that standard SATA drivers slow down a Solid State Drive. RAID drivers are faster. Also, you can use RAID drivers without setting up paired RAID drives. If I had to do it over again I would not order the Dell Optiplex 9000 series but instead the slightly less BIOS- complex 7000 series. Also Win10 Home is more suitable for me than Win10 Pro. And lastly I would not buy another refurbished computer again. It worked out for me, but then I am a retired PC specialist.DB
