Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (Widescreen & Full Screen Edition)

Quirky and a bit playful, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day captured my heart. While Amy Adams was a delight to watch in her role as Delysia, the brightest star in this film is Frances Mcdormand. Following the life of a woman who has been colored by the wisdom of having survived one world war, now on the cusp of another, she gives a performance that is both heartfelt and sincere.As a survivor of the romantic comedy era it was a breath of fresh air to see a movie like this, only just falling into the genre while still maintaining a certain dignity, featuring a strong older woman who is neither weak nor helpless. Absolutely love this film.

I can't decide who i love more in this movie. Francis McDormand is brilliant as the heroic, tragic but indomitable Miss Pettigrew while Amy Adams is utterly charming as the hilariously scandalous Delysia. Kudos also to all the other cast members who made this movie so memorable, especially Shirley Henderson as Edythe and Ciaran Hinds as Joe.

ThisThirties lovers will love the set, props, clothing. The Plot is tough and sweet at the same time. Heroine is tough, with a heart of gold, who can spot phoney idiots immediately. A true sweet love of an honest woman who refused to compromise her values, even to survive. A modern fairy tale for older women who might feel life beyond age 25 is over for them, but who finds True Love by virtue of simply being true to hetself. A nice tale for women, especially women who might feel that life has passed them by. There is always hope for those who are strong, resourceful and true to bring who they are, despite fashionable societal behavioral, but phonry, norms of any time in history.

Such an adorable and fun movie! Frances McDormand gives a delightful performance as Miss Pettigrew, an indigent but quite sagacious and resourceful lady's maid who seems to possess almost magical powers (and a VERY credible British accent!) Amy Adams adds the perfect amount of American spice and sass to make the film enjoyable from start to finish. Great choice for a Girls' Wine and Movie night or a Just Me and a Bowl of Popcorn night.

A bright, witty, drab and destitute woman of a certain age, Miss Pettigrew (the always brilliant Francis McDormand) begins working as a social secretary and girl Friday for the glamorous and incandescent Delysia Lafosse, kept young woman, actress and singer (Amy Adams). Within 24 hours Miss Pettigrew and Delysia become fast friends and confidents as they juggle Delysia's lovers, attend a lingerie luncheon and end up at the club where Dylesia performs. A poignant love story also unfolds for Miss Pettigrew. We're provided a cultural snapshot of pre-War London culture. Social, economic, and sexual mores of men and women are cleverly illustrated as we tag along with Delysia and Miss Pettigrew during their day together. I recommend using closed captioning as the dialogue is fast and witty and you don't want to miss a word! I found the lingerie fashion show hilarious!

What a delightful ride through a day in these superbly crafted character’s lives! This is real cinema at its finest... perfectly casted, well-written, wonderfully directed, fresh story line, and a visual feast that takes you back in time. Amy and Frances are amazing together, and all the other cast are solid in their own right, and also add to the actress chemistry that is alive between them. We were so glad we purchased this dvd as we haven’t had this much fun watching a film in so long and will be excited to do so again. More movies like this please! Highly recommend giving this a watch if you haven’t yet. Bonus features were fun too!

Far too easily overlooked, "Miss Pettigrew" is really a return to an almost classic screwball style of comedy. Not quite that manic, it is very entertaining with a good deal of heart. Amy Adams steals the show, but she couldn't do it without fantastic support from Francis McDormand and Lee Pace. A great little romance for movegoers who haven't given up on the joys of dialog and genuine wit.

I will carefully avoid all spoilers but can say this is a movie about second chances that leaves you feeling good about life and living. Set in London in the 30's, the movie tells a touching story about the lives of two women. One of the high points in the movie for me came with the singing of "If I Didn't Care." I can remember when that song was popular and remembered all of the words as it was beautifully sung toward the end of the movie. If you're too young to remember it from the 30's I suspect you'll still find it a beautiful song performed with compelling drama.We viewed this movie having no knowledge of what it was all about but within the first 10 minutes were completely hooked on the characters and the action. The rather strange assortment of characters all work together to produce a very satisfying and fulfilling screen experience that is worthy of repeated viewings.We gladly add this movie to our collection of family friendly classics that we plan on watching again and again.

I could watch this film over and over again - romantic, humerous, heart-rendering and true to life. Superb acting.

I've just seen this film at the cinema and I enjoyed it very much. I wouldn't say it was fantastic, but it certainly wasn't useless either - somewhere in the middle. If you have enjoyed films such as 'The Truth About Being Earnest', you'll love this. Full of romance, comedy, and drama. You'll be laughing one minute, and feel like crying the next.Set in 1940's Britain fastly approaching war, it follows the story of Miss Pettigrew, a middle age governess who once again has unfairly been sacked from her job. Unemployed and penniless she decides there is no other option but to seize the day, and finds herself working as social secretary to an aspiring young actress known as Delysia Lafosse. Well outside her comfort zone Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous and social world-wind of high society. Taking her role to heart, the film is all about Miss Pettigrew trying to help and navigate Delysia's love life and career, by having learned from her own experiences. What she doesn't realise though, is that Delysia is also helping her...

In diesem Film versammelt sich ein wunderbares Schauspieler-Ensemble, das offensichtlich mit großem Spaß bei der Sache ist und den geneigten Zuschauer mitreißt in die glamouröse Welt der Swinging Thirties.Trotz des Witzes, des opulenten Dekors und der lebendigen Musik ist Miss Pettigrews großer Tag nicht nur Komödie. Der zweite Weltkrieg wirft seine Schatten voraus, und z.B. die Tatsache, daß Miss Pettigrew schon lange nichts Anständiges gegessen hat, gibt diesem wunderbaren Film Tiefe, ohne banal zu wirken.Leider kenne ich die Romanvorlage nicht (was jedoch zu korrigieren gedenke) und kann mich nur auf den Film beziehen. In den Extras der dvd, die erfreulich zahlreich sind, kommt u.a. der Sohn der Autorin zu Wort - er meint, er sei sehr erfreut über diesen Film und überzeugt, seine Mutter wäre es auch.Amy Adams spielt die junge, spritzige, durchaus ein wenig überspannte, amerikanische Sängerin Delysia Lafosse (ein Künstername, natürlich), der Frances McDormand in der Titelrolle einen Tag lang auf Gedeih und Verderb folgt und sie aus manch einem Schlamassel lotst. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day, so der Originaltitel - und zum ersten Mal seit langem lebt Miss Pettigrew einmal wieder. Sie hatte im Leben nicht viel Glück und verdingt sich als Nanny, wobei sie wiederholt ihre Stellung verliert und, als der geneigte Zuschauer ihr begegnet, völlig mittellos dastehtt.Mit Frechheit und Mut ergaunert sie sich charmant die Stellung einer Privatsekretärin (engl: social secretary) bei Miss Lafosse und steht ihr in den Turbulenzen ihres jungen Lebens bei.Delysia benötigt dringend jemanden, der Ordnung in ihr Leben bringt, zumal sie mehrere Männer gleichzeitig jongliert, immer ihre Karriere im Auge. Sie läßt zu, nicht immer gut behandelt zu werden und verpaßt beinahe den Mann, der es ehrlich mit ihr meint - Michael Pardue, gespielt von Lee Pace.Über McDormand und Adams muß im Grunde nichts mehr gesagt werden, da hier zwei Schauspielerinnen agieren, die wie immer qualitativ hochwertige Arbeit abliefern (und McDormand auch einen treffenden, britischen Akzent) und spürbar mit Herzblut dabei sind. Adams gelingt es, die Wandlung einer extravaganten Frau mit Vergangenheit zu zeigen, die erfolgreich eben dieser Vergangenheit zu entfliehen vermag.Das ist wohl auch die Aussage des Films, wenn wir denn eine solche hineinlegen wollen - daß ein jeder, zu jedem Zeitpunkt in seinem Leben, sich entscheiden kann, jemand anders zu werden.Besonders hervor sticht außerdem Lee Pace, den ich für einen der talentiertesten amerikanischen Darsteller seiner Generation halte. Ausgebildet an der Julliard (das amerikanische Äquivalent zur Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts), ein trainierter Theater-Darsteller, der hierzulande vermutlich am meisten durch die Hobbit-Trilogie (er spielte hier Thranduil) oder in Guardians of the Galaxy (als Antagonist Ronan) bekannt sein dürfte.Mir selbst fiel Pace zum ersten Mal im Film The Good Shepherd (ein Robert de Niro Film über die Entstehung der CIA) auf, und ich verfolge seine Laufbahn seither mit großem Interesse.Pace spielt den Pianisten Michael mit dem Charme und dem Charisma eines jungen Cary Grant oder James Stewart, und er stiehlt jede Szene, in der er auftritt. Es geht eine Kino-Magie von ihm aus, von der ich hoffe, sie noch häufig in gutem Filmen bewundern zu können. (Aktuell dreht er übrigens für HBO die Serie Halt and Catch Fire über die frühen Tage der Personal Computer und ist hervorragend darin.)Wer des Englischen ausreichend mächtig ist, dem sei entschieden die Originalfassung empfohlen. Wie so häufig erlebe ich die deutsche Fassung als uninspiriert, die Dialoge bei Weitem nicht ans Original heranreichend.Dieser Film ist ideal für verregnete Sonntag-Nachmittage, geht ins Herz und bleibt dort eine Weile. Ein witzige, schillernde Komödie mit Tiefgang, die glücklich endet und den geneigten Zuschauer mit einem warmen Gefühl zurückläßt.

Es una pelicula tiene un caracter alegre, su guión tiene las dimensiones del amor y de las segundss oportunidades. Es esencialmente un universo femenino y retro desplegado para un disfrute despreocupado y alegre de una película llena de buenos intérpretes. La recomiendo al 100%,como regalo para alguien que esté un poco tristona me parece un acierto y para alguien que quiera un poco de entretenimiento cinematográfico alegre y de calidad, como mi caso, también.

Leider ist das die einzige Verfilmung ihrer wenigen Werke und auch diese Verfilmung stand unter keinem guten Stern. Pearl Harbour vereitelte die ersten Filmpläne von Universal Pictures. Erst im Alter von 94 Jahren (!) kam die Autorin zu schriftstellerischem Ruhm, als ihr wunderschönes Buch wirklich verfilmt wurde.
