The five fists and the linking form
It’s worth it for the five fists and the linking form. The weapon section is a bonus. It doesn’t have the twelve animal forms, but that’s actually for more for advanced students. The five fist forms the foundation. The analogy to western boxing the jab, straight, uppercut, with the addition of the palm strike and a linear back fist. The hook isn’t in the vocabulary since the whole essence is to deliver whole body linear momentum behind every strike.

Excellent
I received this book yesterday, I'm only on page 15 right now but I can already tell it's a great Xingyi book. I've been training and teaching Xingyi since 2001, and regularly pick up new books that I don't have. I'm very excited to see what gems of wisdom are contained in this one, and it's clear there will be many.

As a +20yr practitioner of hsing-i chuan I found this book refreshingly articulate and balanced. While if focuses on Shang style hsing-i chuan, the theory is completely relevant for all Hebei stylists and will have you asking questions of yourself - a good thing. As a westerner who speaks a little Chinese and can read even less, it provided much needed clarity on terminology and language, I really enjoyed connecting these dots that had eluded me for many years. Both beginners and the experienced will benefit from a read of this. I recommend its inclusion into your library.

Excellent concepts to be well studied and applied.
I do agree with the basic principles the book expresses. If , for example, the name given for splitting is "Chuan", then that means "fist" not palm. So why do schools today teach Pi Quan as a palm?

Authenticity for a small price of admission
If you are a Xinyiquan practitioner this would be like a complete textbook. It is extremely detailed and the closest thing you can get to an actual teacher. It will keep you up until the wee hours of the morning studying and decrypting it`s mysteries. Like the martial arts tomes of old in China the book is a modern version chock full of detailed photographs, concise descriptions of techniques and training methods, history, and even the mnemonic poems they so love to use. The book provides plenty of material to keep you quite busy in your training. Whatever style of Xinyi you practice this is a must have investment and reference in your library. Excellent!

great, however
have trained in Xingyiquan for over 30 years, I have many books on the subject and this is one of the best. However the photographs do not support the detailed text. Line drawings would be better, surely for such an important book good images should be used
